Baby Gate Hacks: Simple Solutions for Everyday Problems

TACKLING FREQUENT INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES

CRUCIAL INSTALLATION WARNING

Undertaking these installations requires a specific skill set; attempting this without the assistance of a professional may lead to unforeseen risks and increased expenses.

By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and accepted the terms and conditions available here: Website Terms & Conditions.

The following examples highlight various difficulties I have encountered during installations, which may mirror your own experiences and offer practical solutions.

    • Measure the widest part at the top to determine the appropriate size for the gate and any necessary extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
    • Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder with a metal/aluminium disc to accurately cut the gate, adhering to the measurements illustrated in the reference images above.
    • Remove the plastic component from the section you plan to cut off and insert it into the newly cut part of the gate to ensure proper fitting of the tension knob.
    • This process will become clearer once you have the gate on hand.

INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 2: SECURING GATES ON SKEW WALLS

ADDRESSING THE ISSUE OF INSTALLING ON A SKEW WALL

    • Ensure that the gate/extensions are properly prepared for installation.
    • Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
    • Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to secure the gate using pressure.
    • Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures have been completed and the gate has been tested for stability.

INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES

CONFRONTING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR BABY GATE INSTALLATION

While installing baby gates outdoors can provide a quick and economical solution, it may also void the warranty on these products.

I recommend treating outdoor installations of baby gates as a temporary and cost-effective option.  This approach may risk voiding your warranty on the gates.

    • Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor conditions due to potential exposure to harsh weather.
    • This limitation is clearly indicated in the warranty documentation provided with the product.
    • Failure to comply with warranty terms will lead to the loss of warranty coverage.

For a durable solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. Although this might involve higher costs, it remains the most effective option.

PREPARING BABY GATES AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:

Disclaimer:  None of these measures guarantee complete rust protection; they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate under South African climatic conditions.

Regular treatment every 1-2 months can significantly reduce the likelihood of rust.

To minimise rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to these guidelines:

    • Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover the surface areas at the base as well.
    • Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will facilitate water drainage and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture might accumulate at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
    • Apply a light coating of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
    • Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours) before applying a second coat.

For existing rust:

    • Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product guidelines.
    • Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray from non-rusted areas.
    • The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be covered with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
